Present Continuous Tense

Present Continuous or Present Progressive (El presente progresivo)

This is a compound tense, meaning that there are two parts to the verb. This tense is formed by using the verb to be – “estar” in the present tense + the present participle.

The present participle or gerund (el gerundio/el participio presente) ends in “ing” in English.

e.g. I am working, we are dancing, she is singing

 

In order to form the present participle, remove the ending of the infinitive and add

-ando for ar- ending verbs- e.g. trabajando 

–iendo for er and ir- ending verbs- e.g. comiendo, escribiendo

 

Reminder: Estar in the present tense:

I am washing the car.                                Estoy lavando el carro.

Verbs with irregular present participles:

Some verbs have irregular present participles. Er and ir verbs whose stems end in a vowel use –yendo and not –iendo, to form the present participle.

Examples with irregularly formed present participles:

My father is reading the newspaper in the living room.

Mi padre está leyendo el periódico en el salón.

 

Your aunt is contributing money to the church.

Tu tía está contribuyendo dinero a la Iglesia.

 

Stem-changing verbs also have irregular present participles. In the case of ‘ir’ radical-changing verbs,

o-ue verbs become o-u:

dormir- durmiendo- sleeping

morir- muriendo- dying

 

e-ie verbs become e-i:

advertir- advirtiendo- warning

hervir- hirviendo- boiling

mentir- mintiendo- lying

preferir- prefiriendo- preferring

referir- refiriendo- referring

sentir-s intiendo- regretting

sugerir- sugiriendo- suggesting

 

e-i verbs remain e-i:

competir- compitiendo- competing

decir- diciendo- saying, telling

pedir- pidiendo- requesting, ordering

repetir- repitiendo- repeating

seguir- siguiendo- following

servir- sirviendo- serving

venir- viniendo- coming
